A contract including price and approximate delivery date will require signatures in addition to a 50% non-refundable deposit when terms of the portrait are agreed upon and prior to commencement of work.
Balance is due upon completion and approval of the portrait at which time the client has seven (7) days to review and/or return work for minor changes in accordance with the artist.
Additional expenses incurred such as travel, lodging, shipping costs and applicable sales tax will be billed separately.
A portrait is more than just capturing a likeness of a person's physical features. A portrait is a unique blend of one’s physical appearance and inward personality captured by the artist's response to the subject.
A planning meeting, generally conducted at the client's residence, is scheduled in an effort to accomplish the following tasks:
Meeting and getting to know the subject prior to the photo session allows the artist to become familiar with the gestures and mannerisms of the subject. This is important so that the artist will have the opportunity to capture not only the outward appearance of the subject but also their inner personality.
When possible it is best if the location that the portrait will hang be viewed and photographed by the artist. The location can affect background, color and overall key of the painting. This is not required in order to paint the portrait but is always preferred.
The final contract defining the commission as well as cost are completed prior to scheduling the initial photo session, generally accomplished during the planning meeting.
The photo session generally takes two to three hours to complete. Many photos are taken reflecting various poses and lighting conditions. Photos are used by the artist as reference material during the painting process. Several photos are generally used to compose the final portrait. Photos taken by the artist remain the property of the artist.
A 50% non-refundable deposit will be due at the end of the photo session or planning meeting before any work by the artist commences. This is to cover the artist's time and expenses if for any reason the client is unable to pay the remaining 50% balance due on the painting. In the event this occurs the painting and all related material shall remain the property of the artist.
After the artist has reviewed the photos and met with the client, a final pose and general design of the portrait are agreed upon and any preliminary work necessary for the success of the portrait is begun. After any preliminary work is completed (i.e. digital photographic comps, etc.) the client has the opportunity to review it. Once the client approves the compositional design the final painting will begin. All comps and preliminary work will remain the property of the artist.
The final painting is usually completed within three months after it is begun, depending of course upon the complexity of the work to be done and the artist's schedule. Once completed, the work is reviewed by the client and delivered to them upon approval. The remaining 50% balance is due at this time. The client has seven (7) days to review and/or return the work for minor changes in accordance with the artist.
